Winter solstice was overlaid with Christmas, and the observance of Christmas spread throughout the globe. Along the way, we lost some of the deep connection of our celebrations to a fundamental seasonal, hemispheric event. Many people--of many beliefs--are looking to regain that connection now. We gain inspiration from the universality of the ancient idea--winter solstice celebrations aren't just an invention of the ancient Europeans.
A time of magic.
In many cultures, customs practiced at Christmas go back to pre-Christian times. Many involve divination--foretelling the future at a magic time: the season turning of solstice.
In Russia, there's a Christmas divination that involves candles. A girl would sit in a darkened room, with two lighted candles and two mirrors, pointed so that one reflects the candlelight into the other. The viewer would seek the seventh reflection, then look until her future would be seen.
The early Germans built a stone altar to Hertha, or Bertha, goddess of domesticity and the home, during winter solstice. With a fire of fir boughs stoked on the altar, Hertha was able to descend through the smoke and guide those who were wise in Saga lore to foretell the fortunes of those at the feast.
In Spain, there's an old custom that is a holdover from Roman days. The urn of fate is a large bowl containing slips of paper on which are written all the names of those at a family get-togehter. The slips of paper are drawn out two at a time. Those whose names are so joined are to be devoted friends for the year. Apparently, there's often a little finagling to help matchmaking along, as well.
In Scandinavia, some families place all their shoes together, as this will cause them to live in harmony throughout the year.
And in many, many cultures, it's considered bad luck for a fire or a candle to go out on Christmas Day. So keep those candles burning!

Het gals I have a new studio that I will be teaching level II & III out of starting October 9th.
But....I rented it for the full month so I wanted to have you ladies come down the 2nd of Oct...this tuesday to check it out and perhaps consider the studio if you wish...

DANCE FOR DARFUR

Hello Friends,
Its been a long time since I posted, I really am still here! I
wanted to be sure I had something wonderful to say before I posted
and....WAHOO. ...something wonderful is right around the corner! I
must first start by saying that for several months now I have been
deeply disturbed by the genocide that is occuring in Darfur. I
realize that horrible things happen in the world everyday, but the
plight of the people in Darfur is especially horrific. It seems
that much of the world has turned a blind eye to the misery and
suffering that is so much a part of daily life there. Then on
Wednesday, I heard an interview with a refugee that told of not only
the horrific murder of her husband right in front of her but the
rape that she suffered next to her dead husbands body. I realize
that this is very graffic and disturbing, but we must know the
truth. There are millions of stories like this one, and sadly,
stories that are much worse. I vomited after hearing this story and
sobbed for most of the day, and that is when I knew I could no
longer stand by and do nothing. So that is when the "something
wonderful" came to me. Dancing for Darfur is our something
wonderful! I have a Theater, a Date, and now all I need is YOU!!!!
Rising Phoenix dance company in co-operation with Kashmir dance
company is presenting an all for charity show on November 17, 2007!
We will be raffling off gift baskets, have Henna tattooing, selling
local arts and crafts, all the proceeds will go directly to Save
Darfur/Amnesty International to get women and children out of
refugee camps and into countries offering amnesty/refugee statis to
give those who so desperatly need a fresh start and a chance to
heal. No dancer needs to pay to perform or have flyers offering
their classes. This is wonderful oppurtunity for the groups in Utah
to show their talent for such a good cause. This is show will
promote peace and unity on a local level and hopefully raise
awareness to a global level. We can be such a force for good and
this is a perfect way to start! I am formally asking Thia, Raffa,
Zaharia, Jamilla, Dragomi, Amina, Indie Kumari, Blue Lotus, and any
other groups or soloists who would like to perform to please contact
me right away. Please do not be offended if I did not mention your
group by name. If you want to be a part of this you are welcome.
The show is in November, so thats plenty of time for you to recover
from your Halloween shows. The vision is to have a small
market/boutique to shop at and browse before the show, raffle
drawing at the close of show, teachers handing out flyers for thier
own classes and an atmosphere of peace and positive action. When I
approached Corrie Walker about this on Weds. night she and I sat on
the couch and cried for the people of Darfur, and she said, "we can
not live in a bubble, we have to do something" and from that moment
Kashmir was on board. We also need sound and lights so if any of
you,(Charles, Raj, Bryan) could help us out that would be awsome.
This is a strictly for charity event, so we will not be able to
offer you payment. You will however be making a difference. The
theater seats 250, and tickets will be $10 at the door. More
details to come.....But it is going to be spectacular! Again, I
must stress that this is a for charity event, no one takes any money
from this show, Not One Cent goes to me or anyone else involved in
this show, all proceeds go to charity! Lets make a difference.

on the advertisements that are designed and ready to go.The theater
is at Fort Douglas, I forgot the name DUH! Will post with more

Yasamina and Kismet Bellydance presents the 23rd annual Spring "Meeting of the Tribes" at the historic Masonic Temple Auditorium, 650 East South Temple, this Saturday, May 5, 2-5 pm.

A little about Carolena Nericcio This legendary dance instructor is
the director of Fat Chance Belly Dance of San Francisco. She's a
certified movement instructor, has released 7 instructional DVDs and
3 performance DVDs, and has been teaching for 20 years. She has a
deep knowledge of HOW to move the body, and can teach others to do
it too. Her core belly work and the cleanliness of lines when she
dances is stunning. She is also, of course, the originator &
creatrix of "American Tribal Style" belly dance; the improvisational
Tribal Style Dance that we love so much. She has been my mentor and
my inspiration for more than 10 years.

Many of our favorite Tribal dance troupes sprung up after teachers
trained with her: Paulette Rees-Denis of Gypsy Caravan, Kajira
Djoumanha of Black Sheep Belly Dance, Stephanie Barto of Read My
Hips, Quinn Donovan of Gypsy Fire, and Megha Gavin of Devyani (now
Carolena's dance partner in the Tribal PURA tours), to name a few.
And, many of those funky fusion dance that are so well-known right
now also originally trained with Carolena: Rachel Brice & Jill
Parker, for example.

Even dancers who want to break away from the original "tribal style"
moves and create something new and different would gain much out of
these workshops. As a friend of mine told me, quoting her ballet
teacher "Creativity is discipline's reward." You have to have the
discipline to learn to do it right, before you can change it around
and make it your own... Or as I tell my students – "you need to
know what the rules are before you are allowed to break them".

The workshops are sold as a whole-package, or 1 Day workshops:

A. Tribal:PURA Workshops day 1: $65.00 Until March 31st, 2007..
April 1st and later $75.00.
B. Tribal:PURA Workshops day 2: $60.00 Until March 31st, 2007..
April 1st and later $70.00.
C. PURA Package deal – Both days $120.00 Until March 31st, 2007.

Indian Temple Dance warm-up & stretch
30 minutes - Taught by Megha
Limber up and get your blood flowing with this fun and stimulating

True Tribal Basics & Tribal Combinations
2 hours - Taught by Carolena & Megha
Using fun combinations, we'll breakdown several basic movements and
their correct technique from the Tribal vocabulary. You'll walk away
with mini-choreographies you can plug into your dance and effective
setups for some of the faster moving steps and turns.

We'll take a break, and then come back for a 1-hour class on:

Powerful Presence
1 hour - Taught by Carolena & Megha
Wimpy entrances and endings can kill your show! Learn how to
command the audience's attention with a powerful entrance and end
your set with a bang.

Use Your Inspiration Wisely
1 hour - Taught by Megha
Movements developed by Megha to fit with the FCBD format and how to
make it work. Megha will teach the principals that allow innovation
while staying true to the tribal format, feeling, and function,
using Devyani combinations that fit into the ATS format.
* Dancers should know the basics of Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian
Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choo.
Tribal:PURA WorkShop 2
Sunday, May 13th Advanced Workshop - 3 hours:
Check in at 9:30 – workshop starts at 10:00 am

The Details of this advanced ATS workshop are forthcoming.

HOWEVER: Please note that Carolena has the following criteria for
the Sunday workshop (and there are NO exceptions):

"We can do a Sunday advanced class, with the criteria that students
would have to have taken the Saturday classes. If a sincere person
wants to take Sunday but can't make it to Saturday, I would require
a video/DVD of them performing: taxeem, body wave, hand floreo, arm
undulations, shimmy, basic Egyptian, basic Arabic, pivot bump and
choo-choo."

I hope that you won't miss this chance to study with Carolena &
Megha. This is the first time that Kashmir Dance Company has brought

Hi Girlies I'm Finally Home!

Hi Everyone!

First of all I want to apologize for disappearing for a month or so. My first three weeks in Turkey I spent with an almost debilitating bronchitis then when I went to get onto tribes at work and the site was blocked because it's a chat site and well that's a no no. Anyway I missed everyone terribly! I'm sure I have lot's and lots of catching up to do.

Turkey was most wonderful! The food, the music, the sites, the people. I absolutely fell in love with it and even though I was homesick I didn't want to leave. We were fairly limited to where all they would let us go but I did get out and see the country a bit the last few weeks I was there. I went searching for music and have brought back some fun Turkish pop. When I asked about who was popular right now every place I went they told me "Tarkan"!!! He is like the Turkish Michael Jackson. I looked for good deals on belly dance stuff but the location I was there wasn't a lot. I do have a good contact for bras and belts for good prices that I've brought back if anyone is interested. I had one shipped home and when I get it I'll show you guys.

I just got back from Utah and I just wanted to say that I had a BLAST at the Holiday Hafla at Cedars' on the 26th!!!! It was so much fun seeing Raina, Monica, Leslie, Amina and Shahravar dance!!! You ladies were terrific! I just wanted to burst with happiness because I enjoyed myself so much. I took a lot of pictures, but I'm not a great photographer. I hope you all find one you like! I think everyone looks gorgeous!! (P.S. I love the group shot Monica posted! I wish I could have taken that!) I'm posting pics in the tribe album.

Es Salaam Aleikum.

I wanted to let you all know that I'm starting a Middle-Eastern drum
school called Tabla Arabía (TA-bla a-ra-BEE-ya), which means "Arabic
Drum." With Tabla Arabía, I hope to create an environment where the
instructor and students can learn from each other.

I'll be offering intermediate-level drum classes on Tuesdays, 5:30 PM
to
6:30 PM, at the Rubaiyat Dance Studio, 25 East Kensington Ave. (1500
South), Salt Lake City. It's in a little strip mall on the north side
of
the road. The cost will be $15 per lesson, or $45 a month. You should
have your own dumbek (Thia has some at her new warehouse) and some
knowledge of basic Middle-Eastern rhythms and techniques.

We’ll cover concepts like playing as part of a group, leading a group,
drumming for dancers, techniques beyond the basic, as well as rhythms
that you may not have encountered before. And we’ll definitely have jam
sessions—in class and at local venues—because I believe that the best
way to learn is by doing. I know that my own progress has always been
most rapid when I had lots of chances to drum with other people.

I hope to give my students opportunities to perform at various
recitals,
including Meeting of the Tribes, Thia’s SpringFest, and Kismet’s Annual
Belly Dance Festival. Most important of all, I want us to have fun.

Contact me via email if you're interested, or just show up on any
Tuesday. (And don't forget to vote on the 7th...)

Drummers, this is a good chance to expand your repertoire, get the
rhythms "into your blood", and practice your solos/improvisation.
Dancers, it's also a good idea for you to at least learn the basics.
It's easy to see how it will improve your finger cymbal techniques, and
it also contributes to your overall knowledge of various rhythms.

I'd like to remind you that Dave Hellon offers drum lessons as well.
His
classes are on Monday nights, and I believe he teaches them at Thia's
studio. (Please correct me if I'm wrong; Dave, can you provide more
details?)

Gothla!

Kashmir is Hosting Tempest and the Durga Tour on September 16th. ..

We are planning a 3-hour workshop, and will start with Dancing Darkly - and will touch on, or include aspects of Dramatic body language.
Workshop will be held at the Utah Arts Alliance - 2191 South 300 West. Check in time will be announced.

Gothla performance the evening of Saturday, September 16, 2006. We are looking at 2 possibilities - and will announce the details as they become final. I am leaning toward having the event at a restaurant so I can actually sit and enjoy myself for a change. So we will probably sell advance tickets which would include your dinner. Performers and spectators alike will need a ticket.

My vision for the Gothla is "professionally informal", if that makes any sense. Meaning the line up will be set - but in not as formal a setting as a theater!
There are still a few performance slots available - so message or email me if you are interested.
Please be aware that the Gothla isn't a Halloween campy type show, but a themed event, and if you have any questions as to if your piece is appropriate for this event, perhaps we could make arrangements for you to show me/us the piece!

NOTE:* Please be aware that I am asking ALL performers to support the workshop - we are keeping costs really low - but can only do so if we have your support of the workshopas well as your participation in the Gothla!

Dear Friends, I am so sad that I was unable to make it to the showcase on Saturday. It broke my heart to miss seeing you. Unfortunately, the reunion/birthday party/aniversary that I was at stretched longer than planned. I also felt like I needed to stay and support my husband because this will probably be the last time he sees his grandmother. (The fact that we only had one car also limited my options.) Kami Liddle is a solo dance artist born with a passion for movement. She began taking ballet and tap lessons at the age of four and performed in numerous dance recitals as a young girl. At the age of eleven, Kami auditioned for a part as a hip hop and jazz dancer for a youth performing troupe in Victorville, California and performed with the group for several years before moving to Nevada. Kami's first belly dance instructor was a wonderful woman named Tahari. She was a gorgeous hula dancer and taught an ethno-cabaret fusion of belly dance. In addition to studying with Tahari, Kami took an interest in American Tribal Style and studied Fat Chance Belly Dance religiously.
Kami's style is what she calls a modern fusion of an ancient dance. Although she is primarily a tribal dancer, she pulls from the various styles of belly dance that she has studied, as well as modern, hip hop, jazz, and bhangra dance. Her goal is to always be a student of dance and to constantly expand her repertoire. In addition to performing as a soloist, she collaborates and performs with other dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo, directed by Rachel Brice. Kami has worked collaboratively with Samantha Riggs of Boom Boom Bollywood on choreography and periodically performs with the company.

SLC Festival

Hi all,
We have been invited to teach at this years festival and we are trying to decide if it will be financially feaseable for at least 3 of us to travel. Wondering if you all could give me a little feedback on the festival and clinics (its been at least 5 years since I have attended).
1). How many people usually attend tribal workshops in SLC? Both at the festival and otherwise
2). With all the clinics to choose from, do you attend more than one a year?
3). Anything else that should sway our decision?

Our workshop has been finalized!! Jullia from Troupe Hipnotica will present a workshop on "creating new words from from an old language" (AKA creating new stuff from
the FCBD base language, formations, props, and
solos.) Yeah! The workshop will be Wednesday, December 28, from 7-9 pm at the Central City Community Center. Look for flyer and event posting coming soon!

I'm still working on the location for our workshop for Wed., Dec, 28. Central City Community Center is available, but it's $50/hour for the room large enough to accomodate us. (I guessed there might be 25 people coming including Shah Sitara, Kashmir, Amina?, friends). I'm trying to get Carry's number for the All That Dance Studio. Anyone have it?

Hi all,

I e-mailed Yasamina re: a time for tribes. I just asked if we could know if we would be in the first or second half, but she
e-mailed back and said she could schedule us at our convenience ( I would attach the e-mails if I knew how).
I was thinking earlier is better, but let me know what you think or we could discuss it tuesday.
